Common Causes of Neck, Left Shoulder and Upper Back Pain

January 19th, 2010 · No Comments

Sadly, at some point in time many people will endure the common pain felt in the neck, left shoulder and upper back. There is a wide difference in the severity of the pain that can radiate from these areas. Even though the causes can vary greatly, the shoulder is often the root cause of neck, left shoulder and upper back pain. Becasue of the complex composition of the shoulder and its movements and joints, it is very vulnerable to incidents of spains, strains, and tears. This can be a source of inflammation of the ligaments, muscles, bursa, and the capsules which are part of the joints makeup. Neck, left shoulder and upper back pain can be caused by injury to the shoulder.

The joints, muscles and tendons in the shoulders are responsible for the wide range of mobility and when injured usually result in upper back and shoulder pain. Neck and shoulder pain may be just a temporary condition or it may result in long lasting and severe pain.

Tendinitis, which is basically a cord that connects the bones and muscles, is one of the many causes of common neck, left shoulder and upper back pain. Tendinitis can result from wear and tear over a period of years or acute injury. Other causes of tendinitis include overuse and degenerative disease. Rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common causes of pain requiring some form of shoulder pain treatment. The rotator cuff is comprised of muscles and tendons which provide motion and stability to your shoulder. The space provided for your rotator cuff is very narrow, so swelling or inflammation can cause neck, left shoulder and upper back pain along with weakening of your arm.

If you know the cause of your injury it is easier to cure shoulder pain. One thing that can help or even prevent shouder and neck pain is a change in lifestyle. Although you cannot always prevent injuries and accidents, there are things that you can do to help stop recurring pain. Aside from keeping yourself in generally great shape, engaing in a daily regimine focusing on the shoulder, back and neck area will protect and strengthen the muscles. Things to incorprate into your lifestyle to help your problem would be to always deal positively with stress, maintain proper posture, lift properly and find new ways to do the work you need to do.

It is important to consult a doctor and find treatment if there is any kind of neck, left shoulder and upper back being felt. The evaluation may consist of a physical examination and various tests such as x-rays, range of motion tests, MRI scans, and a neurological inspection. You will begin a treatment program once a doctor has found the cause of your neck, left shoulder and upper back pain. You can also treat your shoulder pain and back pain naturally. Once you know what has caused your pain you are half way there.
